The Historic Tarragona Province

A region in eastern Spain, the Tarragona Province is in the southern part of the autonomous community of Catalonia. It is surrounded by the provinces of Castellón, Teruel, Zaragoza, Lleida , Barcelona, and the Mediterranean Sea. The site of Tarragona, in the heart of the Costa Daurada, beckons one to visit a coastline of tranquil, shallow waters, which is ideal for a family vacation, with excellent beaches of golden hue.

The historic Tarragona province is rich and diverse, best known for its marvelous Costa Dorada but with much more to offer. Apart from its long golden beaches, the region’s well known feature is the Ebro Delta. The course of the river through the region makes Tarragona province a fertile agricultural land in its interiors. The province also boasts of fine historic cities.

Salou and Cambrils are two main resorts in the Tarragona province, drawing in thousands of tourists every year. These are a perfect destination for any family looking for lots of sun, sea and sand.. One can also explore the quieter seaside towns of Altafulla and Torredembarra, with great beaches and good restaurants.

In the historic Tarragona province, the city of Tarragona itself also has some excellent beaches. It is also home to the best-preserved Roman ruins on the Iberian Peninsula, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reus, best-known for its airport, is a fine inland town and best for any holiday. It is also the birthplace of architect Antoni Gaudí and boasts of some very fine Modernist buildings.

The Tarragona province is also home to the truly gripping Ebro Delta Natural Park. This place if of international importance and is a must stopover point for many species of migratory birds. So if your idea of a holiday revolves around fishing or bird watching, then this is definitely the place for you.. In medieval times, vines were introduced by the monks, which further improved the agriculture in the region, along with the excellent fish and meat. This explains why the food and drink in Tarragona Province is so exceptional.
